Highly regarded by vegans around the globe, nutritional yeast is a must-have vegan pantry staple. From an amazing Parmesan alternative to a bomb nondairy nacho cheese dip, nutritional yeast (lovingly known as “nooch”) can do it all.

But what is it?

Nutritional yeast is an inactive yeast that’s grown on a nutrient-dense medium and then harvested and dried. A serving of nooch (two tablespoons) contains all nine essential amino acids and nine grams of “complete” protein. When fortified, it is also a great source of iron and B vitamins. Known for its cheesy, nutty flavor, nutritional yeast can be found at most natural food stores and the bulk bin at some nationwide grocers like Whole Foods. While you can certainly just sprinkle them on popcorn, these savory flakes can take your favorite recipes to the next level.
